That's right, the Next Dor house is officially wired for wireless! Now you can come over and study, work on projects, or just surf. Add Comment Last night State Representative Jake Zimmerman, of Missouri's 83rd district, stopped by to chat with an intimate but interested group of young adults about his background, path to politics, and experiences. In between comically spewing infamous quotes from Alabama's political history, Rep. Zimmerman spoke about current issues in St. Louis and Missouri politics as well as some of his own philosophies regarding things like term-limits, campaign fundraising and the struggle between the responsibility to represent your district and the ability to lead it. One of the more serious topics discussed was the factual overview of the recent incidents involving former Missouri State Senator Jeff Smith and former State Rep. Steve Brown. Young, Jewish politicians really felt the impact of these events as one third of the Jewish members of Missouri's legislature were sentenced in federal court this week. Representative Zimmerman was close to both of them and remains supportive during their difficult times. Programs like this are what Next Dor STL is really all about. Not only did we learn more about the representative, but last night's participants were able to engage in a back and forth discussion with one of Missouri's strongest up-and-coming political leaders and were really able to learn what the day to day looks like for an elected official during the legislative session. We learned about the balance between campaigning for re-election while fulfilling all of the responsibilities of being an elected official and discussed some of the internal struggles he faces on a daily basis when two opposing groups lobby the legislature for policy that favors their group and both groups have good intentions. We are very grateful for the time that Representative Zimmerman spent with us at Next Dor STL. We look forward to seeing where he goes next in his political journey and hope that he will come back soon to share more of his experiences with us. Last night, Next Dor hosted an open dinner to show off all of the work that has been done on the house and to get people together. Despite the dreary weather, the turnout was strong and the feedback positive! The house is really coming along nicely! The renovations are nearly complete, everything has a fresh coat of paint and the house is almost ready for you. Check out this video we took of what the house is looking like. |
